Podcast Episode Summary
With consumers spending an average of 2.5 hours per day on social media (DataReportal) and 70% of insurance companies already using social media to reach consumers (Agent for the Future), it’s crucial independent insurance agencies are present and active on social media in order to reach their potential customers and engage with their current policyholders.
Here are five tips to successfully get started on social media as an independent insurance agency.
1. Create Profiles Based on What Your Agency Can Manage
- Implement a crawl, walk, run approach, where your agency starts with only the social media platforms you can sustainably manage.
- Facebook is a great starting point since it is the most widely used social media platform.
- If your agency sells commercial lines, LinkedIn might be the right starting point to connect with business owners.
- Create profiles for other platforms as your agency is able to effectively manage them.
2. Set A Consistent Schedule
- You don’t need to constantly post to be successful.
- Consistency is key, so consider whether your agency is able to post weekly, daily, or a few times each week.
- Setting a consistent and manageable posting schedule can help your agency streamline the social media process.
3. Write & Schedule Posts In Advance
- It can be so easy to lose track of time in your busy schedules and never post on social media in real time.
- By scheduling posts in advance, you can save your agency a lot of time and energy.
- Consider whether it makes sense for your agency to schedule posts through individual platforms or by using a third-party scheduling platform where you can simultaneously schedule posts for multiple platforms.
4. Engage With Your Followers
- Social media is a two-way street.
- Like and comment on followers’ posts.
- Quickly respond to comments and direct messages you receive.
- The more active you are in engaging with your followers, the more the social media algorithms will increase your profiles’ visibility.
- Engaging with your followers will also encourage them to continue liking and commenting on your posts in the future.
5. Mix Up Your Content
- It’s good to mix up the type of content you provide your followers on your social media channels to keep your platforms interesting.
- Write educational content to become a thought leader and help your followers discover important coverage options they should consider.
- Inspirational content can personalize your brand and help followers connect more with your agency.
- Showcase your agency’s involvement in the community or share a book that you recently read that inspired you.
- Entertaining content is meant to be fun and casual and spark engagements and conversations.
- Share behind-the-scenes footage of your team goofing off in the office or everyone’s favorite office pet.
